Our Story

STEMM Kids began in the late 1990s, when our founder, a former classroom teacher and audio-visual engineer, started a licensed program for children from pre-K through 12th grade. It began with private lessons in the physics of music, music theory, vocal training, and reading sheet music, and grew into workshops where children learned guitar, keyboard, and voice.

In 2010 the program became official. Our founder, Michelle Renee Weston Fequiere, began as a recording artist, working in studios with platinum-selling engineers and producers, and went on to engineer and produce in television and radio, reaching the Emmys as a broadcast engineer. Michelle Renee Weston Fequiere holds a degree in computer engineering and biomedical informatics from NJIT. Co-founder Norman Alexander Francis holds a degree in electrical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University, studied electronics at DeVry, and worked as a research and development engineer on parts for an engineering company in New Jersey. Together they expanded into mathematics, robotics, electronics, and every area of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

We opened a storefront on Main Street in Stone Mountain, Georgia, offering after-school tutoring and hands-on STEM projects. Our first project was a paid website update for a local business, built by our students. We supported reading, writing, and math along the way, because those are the foundation for all STEM learning.

We brought our tangrams, magnets, and electronic kits to PTA events and to tables at local businesses, and ran sessions at the Conyers and Stonecrest public libraries in Georgia. Today STEMM Kids is an on-demand program with online videos, so any child can take part from anywhere.
